Pool Safety Checklist

To assist you in complying with the new Pool Fencing Laws on the first inspection we recommend that you go through the checklist and rectify, or have someone rectify any potential non-conforming areas prior to your inspection date.

1.   Pool Gates – Pool gates must swing away from the pool, self-close and self-latch from all positions. Latches must be 1.5m in height.

2.   Pool Barriers – The height of the pool safety barrier must be at least 1.2m high from finished ground level. Check that garden beds and ground levels have not

changed or grown over with time and reduced the height of the pool barrier. Gaps in rails must not exceed 100mm in width.

3.   Dividing Barriers – If your pool barrier is also a dividing barrier, and less than 1.8m, the non-climbable zone must be located on the outside of the fence i.e.

in our neighbours. If it is 1.8m or more in height the non-climbable zone can be on either side. as long as the clearance between horizontal members of the fence are

      a minimum of 900mm.

4.   Branches – Branches that a child could use to climb over the pool safety barrier must be trimmed back so that there is no chance of a foot hold.

5.   Climbable Objects – There must be a non-climbable zone of 900mm within the fences. Remove climbable objects from the pool safety barrier and surrounding area.

6.   Windows – Windows opening into the pool enclosure must not open more than 100mm. It is recommended to install permanently fixed security screens on windows

that open into the pool enclosure.

7.   Doors – Doors must not open from the house into the pool area. Ensure that there is a pool safety barrier separating the house and the pool.

8.   Resuscitation Sign – Make sure that your resuscitation sign is visible from the pool area and includes instructions for infant resuscitation.
